titleOfInvention | Method for steam pressing composite board having at least one finished surface |
abstract | In a method of making a synthetic wood product having a commercially finished surface, a mat is made of wood fibers treated with a binder. The mat is mounted in a compression cavity formed between two compression platens. The first compression platen is a conventional hot compression platen without a port. The conventional platens can be smooth or patterned to emboss one surface of the finished product. Another compression platen is a steam injection platen with a steam injection port. The compression cavity is sealed to completely consolidate the mat. Primary steam is injected through the steam injection port into the mat at a temperature and pressure sufficient to raise the temperature of at least the thickness portion of the mat to 100 ° C. The injected steam is then evacuated from the mat through the steam injection port together with the trapped air and moisture. A second amount of steam is injected from the steam injection port to the mat at a time and sufficient pressure sufficient to cure the binder. The secondary amount of steam is evacuated from the mat through the steam injection port before opening the compression cavity. |
