titleOfInvention | Process and Materials for Aligning Liquid Crystals and Liquid Crystal Optical Elements |
abstract | The present invention exposes at least one optical alignment layer comprising anisotropic absorbing molecules to polarized light having a wavelength belonging to an absorption band of the anisotropic absorbing molecule, so that the exposed anisotropic absorbing molecules are exposed to the surface of the optical alignment layer with respect to the polarization direction of incident light. Thus inducing the orientation of the liquid crystal medium at + and − angles; And applying a liquid crystal medium to the optical alignment layer, wherein the anisotropic absorbing molecule comprises essentially one or more diaryl ketones. The present invention also relates to liquid crystal optical storage media, liquid crystal display elements and liquid crystal diffractive optical elements produced by the method of the present invention, and to novel polyimide compositions useful as optical alignment layers in the method of the present invention. |
