titleOfInvention Process for Removing Silica from Wastewater
abstract Disclosed herein are methods and systems for removing silica from large amounts of wastewater. In this process, the wastewater stream containing silica is treated with a flocculant such as epichlorohydrin / dimethylamine polymer to produce clustered agglomerated spherical particles having a diameter of at least 5 microns. Treated wastewater is passed through a microfiltration membrane that physically separates silica contaminant particles from the wastewater. Commercially available microfiltration membranes with pore sizes of 0.5 microns to 5 microns can be used. The flow rate of the treated wastewater passing through the microfiltration membrane is from 150 gallons per square foot of membrane per day (GFD) to 600 GFD. Solids are removed from the surface of the membrane by periodically backwashing the microfiltration membrane and intermittently draining the filtration vessel in which the membrane is placed. The solid material in the filtration vessel is transferred to a holding tank for further processing.
