A liquid organic fuel cell 10 using the solid electrolyte membrane 18 is provided. Organic fuel, such as a methanol / water mixture, circulates past the anode 18 of the cell and oxygen or water circulates past the cathode 16. The battery electrolyte membrane is preferably made of Nafion. Also provided is a method for improving the performance of a carbon electrode structure, wherein a high surface area carbon particle / teflon binder structure is immersed in a Nafion / methanol bath to impregnate the electrode with Nafion. An anode manufacturing method for this fuel cell is described, in which metal alloys are deposited on an electrode from a solution containing perfluorooctane sulfonic acid. Fuel additives containing this acid and new organic fuels are also described. |
