titleOfInvention | Method of Making Dinitrotoluene |
abstract | The present invention relates to a two step process for preparing dinitrotoluene from toluene and nitric acid in the presence of sulfuric acid. In the first step, toluene and nitric acid are reacted in an amount at which mononitrotoluene is produced under isothermal conditions. The reaction mixture is then separated into organic and acid phases. The organic phase is then further reacted with nitric acid under adiabatic conditions to produce dinitrotoluene. The reaction mixture is then separated into acid and organic phases. Dinitrotoluene is recovered from the organic phase. The acid phase is recycled after removing at least 5% by weight of water from the acid phase and adding sufficient nitric acid to replace what was consumed during the nitration reaction. |
