abstract PURPOSE: A lignan compound saururin A having antioxidant activity for lipoproteins having low density is provided, thereby the lignan compound can be used for the prevention and treatment of circulatory diseases including arteriosclerosis. CONSTITUTION: The lignan compound saururin A having antioxidant activity for lipoproteins having low density is represented by formula (1). The lignan compound saururin A is produced by the following steps of: extracting the powder of Saururus chinensis Baill roots with methanol; extracting the first extract with water, n-hexane and chloroform; separating the second extract by developing it on silica gel column chromatography using n-hexane and ethyl acetate mixed solvent as developing solvents; separating the eluate by developing it on reverse phase silica gel column chromatography using methanol as a developing solvent; and separating the eluate by developing it on silica gel column chromatography using chloroform and methanol mixed solvent as developing solvents.
