titleOfInvention Process for the manufacture of n-phosphonomethylglycine
abstract The present invention relates to a process for the production of formaldehyde, alkali metal cyanide and aminomethylphosphonic acid in a pH of from 10 to 13 (and preferably from 11 to 11.5) aqueous solution, with the addition of inorganic acid at a rate sufficient to maintain the pH within the desired range. To yield N-phosphonomethylglycinonitrile; and then 2) hydrolyzing the N-phosphonomethylglycynonitrile product of step (1) to produce a salt of N-phosphonomethylglycine and Optionally, 3) neutralizing a salt of N - phosphonomethylglycine to obtain N - phosphonomethylglycine. The present invention also relates to a method for producing N - phosphonomethylglycine (glyphosate) or a salt thereof.
