titleOfInvention | Improved processes for making alkylbenzensulfonate surfactants and products thereof |
abstract | The present invention belongs to the field of preparation of alkylbenzenesulfonate surfactants. The method includes a combination of two essential steps, a delinearization step and an alkylation step. The delinearization step selected in the present invention provides a specific type of defined branching to aliphatic hydrocarbons having 10 to about 16 carbon atoms. Hydrocarbons include olefins or corresponding paraffins whose hydrocarbon chain lengths (eg C 10 to C 14 ) are suitable for preparing detergents. The second essential step is an alkylation step having an internal isomer selectivity of 0 to about 40, wherein the hydrocarbon is used to catalytically monoalkylate the benzene using an alkylation catalyst. Such alkylation catalysts preferably comprise at least partially crystalline porous zeolite containing solids which are intermediate in acidity and pore size. Preferred alkylation catalysts include acidic non-fluorinated mordenites that are at least partially dealuminated. The method further includes the step of sulfonating, neutralizing, and incorporating the resulting modified alkylbenzenesulfonate surfactant into the consumer product. The invention also relates to an article according to the method of the invention, comprising a modified surfactant and a consuming cleaning article containing the same. |
