Taste-masked microcapsule compositions and methods of manufacture |
abstract |
The present invention provides a taste masked microcapsule composition for administering a drug. The composition comprises a drug and microcapsules consisting of a substantially insoluble polymeric material, typically a cellulosic polymer. The microcapsules can be incorporated into a number of pharmaceutical formulations, including chewable tablets, effervescent tablets, powders, dispersions and the like. The present invention also provides a method of masking the taste of a drug involving a phase separation-coacervation technique of coating the drug with a relatively high concentration of polymeric material. This high coating content provides an effective taste masking effect while allowing targeted release of the drug so that the drug can be released within a short time after passing through the mouth. |
