titleOfInvention Use of a monolith catalyst for the hydrogenation of dinitrotoluene to toluenediamine
abstract The present invention relates to an improved process for hydrogenating nitroaromatic compositions, ie dinitrotoluene, with hydrogen in a reactor using a monolith catalyst system. The method of continuous adiabatic hydrogenation of dinitrotoluene with toluenediamine in substantially no solvent in a plug flow reactor system comprising a monolith catalyst has many advantages. This method generally includes the following steps.n n n Continuously feeding a feedstock consisting of dinitrotoluene and the reaction product components to the reactor, where the feedstock has less than 30% solvent by weight,n n n Hydrogenating dinitrotoluene to toluenediamine under adiabatic conditions, andn n n Continuously removing the hydrogenation reaction product from the reactor.
