abstract An article having a front waistband portion 38, a back waistband portion 40, and an intermediate portion interconnecting the front and back waistband portions consists of a backsheet layer 22 and a pair of side panels. Each side panel 90 extends laterally from an opposite side end of at least one waistband portion of the backsheet, each side panel 90 comprising a free end region having a predetermined length dimension. The stress beam portion 98 is connected to each side panel 90 along its free end region, the beam portion 98 providing a relatively high Gurley stiffness and at least a significant and significant length of the length of the free end region of the side panel. It has a length dimension that is a percentage. The securing mechanism is connected to each stress beam portion and arranged to extend transversely from each side panel to secure the waistband portion of the article to the wearer. The fixed mechanism has a base length that is less than a limited percentage and a choice of the length of the stress beam portion.
