Heterogeneous foam materials |
abstract |
The present invention relates to heterogeneous polymeric foam structures made from interconnected continuous bubble type HIPE, wherein the foam structures have at least two distinct regions. Such heterogeneous foams are used for various purposes, for example for energy and fluid absorption, insulation and filtration. The present invention also relates to heterogeneous absorbent polymeric foams capable of capturing, distributing and storing these fluids in contact with aqueous fluids (particularly body fluids such as urine and blood). The foams of the present invention have two or more distinct regions with different densities, polymer compositions, surface properties and / or microporous morphological properties. The invention also relates to a process for obtaining heterogeneous foams by polymerizing high discontinuous phase water-in-oil emulsions. In one embodiment, the process of the present invention uses two or more separate HIPEs, each emulsion comprising a relatively small amount of oil phase and a relatively large amount of aqueous phase. |
