An anode 6 having a major surface and enclosed in the vacuum chambers 1, 2 and 3, a fluorescent film 7 formed on the major surface, and a cathode 9 enclosed in a vacuum chamber opposite the fluorescent film; In manufacturing the low-voltage electron beam excited fluorescent display device 10, a phosphor is provided, and in preparing the phosphor, an oxysulfide and an oxide necessarily formed on the surface of the oxysulfide must be included. Oxisolides are represented by Ln 2 O 2 S: R, where Ln is at least one selected from the group consisting of Gd, La, Y and Lu, where R is a rare earth component. The oxide is removed from the phosphor to produce a phosphor from which the oxide has been removed. The paste is coated on the main surface of the anode, on which the oxide-free phosphor, conductive material, and self-decomposable binder are formed on the insulating substrate 1 constituting the vacuum chamber. The binder of the paste is heated in a non-oxidizing atmosphere to form a phosphor film having phosphors and conductive material free of oxides on the major surface of the anode. The anode and cathode are placed in a vacuum chamber to obtain a low voltage electron beam excited fluorescent display. The oxide may be Ln 2 O 3 in which the component Ln 2 O 2 S of the oxysulfide is changed. |
