abstract |
High purity diaryl carbonate is prepared by transesterifying (A) (a) diaryl oxalate and phenolic compounds or (b) alkyl oxalate in one or two steps in the presence of a catalyst to prepare diaryl oxalate while removing by-products from the reaction system. (D) collecting diaryl oxalate from the resulting reaction product mixture of step (B), (A), and (C) decarbonylating aryl oxalate to carbon monoxide, preferably in the presence of a phosphorus compound-containing catalyst. The reaction by-products formed are produced in high yield by the step of converting diaryl oxalate to the corresponding diaryl carbonate while removing from the reaction system and collecting diaryl carbonate from the reaction product mixture of step (C). |
