abstract | The present invention provides a biofuel cell using a metal salt reducing bacterium that performs an electrode reaction without an electron transfer medium. The metal salt reducing bacteria according to the present invention consume the reducing power generated from the fermentation metabolism outside the cell through electron metabolism, so that the electric current can be generated using the organic and inorganic substances contained in the wastewater as fuel. In the fuel cell using the metal salt reducing bacteria according to the present invention, maximum energy of 0.42 V and 1.1 mA was generated when about 30 mM of lactate was oxidized to acetic acid. The efficiency of the fuel cell was improved by increasing the amount of cells used as a catalyst and the effective electrode area. |
