The present invention relates to a wavelength converter, a light emitting device using the same, and a method for manufacturing the wavelength converter. The wavelength converter includes a translucent substrate (20) and a thin film (22) formed on the surface (20a) of the translucent substrate (20) and containing a phosphor. The average particle diameter of the sintered compact which comprises a translucent board | substrate (20) is 5-40 micrometers. The translucent substrate (20) contains at least 10 to 500 ppm by mass of MgO. As the phosphor, the general formula: (Caα, Euβ) (Si, Al) 12 (O, N) 16 (where 1.5 <α + β <2.2, 0 <β <0.2, O / N ≦ 0) .04) and a phosphor mainly composed of α-sialon. |
