There is a need for a liquid crystal medium that exhibits stability to heat, light, etc., extremely large dielectric anisotropy, and exhibits an optically isotropic liquid crystal phase. Also, various optical elements that can be used in a wide temperature range, have a short response time, a large contrast ratio, and a low driving voltage are required. A liquid crystal composition comprising an achiral component T containing at least one compound 1 represented by formula (1) and a chiral agent, and exhibiting an optically isotropic liquid crystal phase. In formula (1), R 1 is, for example, alkyl, L 1 and L 2 are each independently fluorine or hydrogen, and X 1 is, for example, halogen. |
