To provide a method for producing colloidal silica in a high yield in a short time, and further a method for producing colloidal silica capable of easily adjusting the particle diameter of silica contained in colloidal silica. (Solution) The method includes a step of obtaining colloidal silica by reacting metal silicon (Si) with water in an aqueous solution containing an alkaline catalyst and a dispersant, and the dispersant is selected from inorganic acids, organic acids or salts thereof. And a method for producing colloidal silica, which is one or more ionic substances, and further comprising adjusting the particle size of silica by controlling the rate of addition of metallic silicon into an aqueous solution containing an alkaline catalyst and a dispersant.
