abstract | A polyvalent carboxylic acid cyclic anhydride, a polyvalent carboxylic acid or a mixture thereof is reacted with hydroxylamine or a salt thereof in an organic solvent under dehydrating conditions to obtain a corresponding N-hydroxy cyclic imide compound. As the polyvalent carboxylic acid cyclic anhydride, succinic anhydride, glutaric anhydride and the like can be used. As the polyvalent carboxylic acid, succinic acid, glutaric acid, adipic acid and the like can be used. In this method, it is preferable to carry out the reaction while using an organic solvent azeotropic with water as all or part of the reaction solvent and removing water in the reaction system by azeotropy with the organic solvent. According to this method, an N-hydroxy cyclic imide compound can be produced with good yield from either a polyvalent carboxylic acid cyclic anhydride or a polyvalent carboxylic acid. |
