A nonmagnetic support, at least one subbing layer formed on one surface of the nonmagnetic support, containing nonmagnetic powder and a binder resin, and a magnetic powder formed on the subbing layer; A magnetic recording medium having at least one magnetic layer containing a binder resin and a back layer formed on the other surface of the nonmagnetic support, wherein the magnetic powder contained in the uppermost magnetic layer of the magnetic layer comprises: A rare earth-iron-based magnetic powder consisting essentially of a spherical or elliptical rare earth element and a transition element mainly composed of iron or iron, having a number average particle diameter of 5 to 50 nm and an average of 1 to 2 A magnetic recording medium having an axial ratio and having a total thickness of less than 6 μm. This magnetic recording medium can realize an excellent block error rate that cannot be realized by a magnetic recording medium using conventional acicular magnetic powder. |
