Production of alpha,beta-unsaturated aliphatic monocarboxylic acid or ester thereof |
abstract |
PURPOSE:To obtain a compound useful as a raw material for various plastics, etc., in good yield with improved catalyst life, by reacting saturated aliphatic monocarboxylic acids with formaldehydes in the vapor phase using a specific catalyst. CONSTITUTION:Saturated aliphatic monocarboxylic acids or esters thereof are reacted with formaldehyde or a derivative thereof, preferably at 250-400 deg.C under 5kg/cm<2>G pressure to afford the aimed substance. In the process, the reaction is carried out using a catalyst prepared by supporting an antimony compound (e.g. antimony pentoxide) and an alkali metal compound (e.g. K or Rb) on a silica carrier with <=500ppm alumina content. The molar ratio of the saturated acid to the formaldehyde is 10/1-1/3, preferably 5/1-1/2. |
