abstract NEW MATERIAL:A compound expressed by formula I [ring Nc is norbornylidene; R1 is hydrocarbon or heterocyclic group; X is O or >N-R2 (R2 is H, alkyl, aryl or -R3-R4 (R3 is bifunctional organic group; R4 is H or naphthyl); ring Y is aromatic hydrocarbon group or unsaturated heterocyclic group]. USE:A photochromic material. PREPARATION:A compound expressed by formula II is reacted with a compound expressed by formula III (R5 and R6 are alkyl) in a polar aprotic polar solvent, such as DMF or THF, in the presence of a condensing agent, such as NaH or tert-butoxide, at 0-110 deg.C and then treated with a base, such as 10% ethanolic NaOH solution, to provide a dicarboxylic acid, which is subsequently cyclized with acetic anhydride, etc., to afford an acid anhydride expressed by formula IV. The resultant acid anhydride expressed by formula IV is then cyclized to provide the compound expressed by formula I (X is O). If the compound expressed by formula IV is reacted with an amine compound, the compound expressed by formula I (X is >N-R2) is obtained.
