NEW MATERIAL:A compound, expressed by the formula and having the following physico-chemical properties. Property; fat-soluble and colorless needlelike crystal. Melting point; 100-103 deg.C. Specific rotatory power; [alpha]D<23>=+168.3 deg. (C=1.0, CHCl3). Molecular formula; C16H20O6. Molecular weight; 308. Solubility; soluble in ethanol, acetone, ethyl acetate and chloroform, sparingly soluble in water and insoluble in n-hexane. Color reaction; positive to sulfuric acid and KMnO4. Biological activity; inhibitory action on germination of higher plant seeds, herbicidal activity, plant growth retardant action, etc. USE:A herbicide and plant growth retardant. PREPARATION:A microorganism, belonging to the genus Paecilomyces and capable of producing the compound expressed by the formula [e.g. Paecilomyces.variotii.Bainier SANK 21086 strain (FERM BP-1351)] is preferably cultivated in a liquid culture medium at 24 deg.C and weak acidic - neutral pH for 150-200hr by a shaking culture method, etc. |
