abstract | NEW MATERIAL:A pyrimidylphenyl ester of formula I (R 1 is lower alkyl; R 2 is alkyl alkoxy; * means asymmetric carbon). n EXAMPLE: (S)-2-[4'-(2-Methoxypropionyloxy)phenyl]-5-n-octyloxypyrimidine. n USE: It is useful as a component of ferrodielectric chiral smectic liquid crystal composition. This compound is a liquid crystal compound showing only smectic A phase without autogenous polarization, but, when it is used together with another liquid crystal material taking the smectic C phase, they gives a ferrodielectric chiral smectic liquid crystal composition with large autogenous polarization and quick response speed. The composition can be used in displays or switching devices utilizing the electro-optic effect of the liquid crystals. n PREPARATION: For example, the reaction of a compound of formula II (R is lower alkyl) with another compound of formula III is performed in the pres ence of a condensing agent to give the compound of formula I. n COPYRIGHT: (C)1989,JPO&Japio |
