titleOfInvention | Purification of 2,4-xylenol |
abstract | PURPOSE: To purify 2,4-xylenol in satisfiable purity and yield at a low cost, by selectively condensing 2,5-xylenol in a crude mixture of 2,4-xylenol isomers with an aldehyde in the presence of a Lewis acid and separating and removing the condensate from the mixture. n CONSTITUTION: A mixture of xylenol isomers containing 2,4-xylenol and 2,5- xylenol which cannot be separated from each other by simple fractional distillation because of nearly equal boiling points is made to react with an aldehyde, preferably formaldehyde or acetaldehyde in the presence of a Lewis acid (preferably chloride of a metal such as Zn, Fe, Al, Sb, Ni, Cu, Sn, Co, Cr or Pb) to effect the separation and removal of the 2,5-xylenol as a xylenol-aldehyde condensate. A high-purity 2,4-xylenol useful as a raw material for synthetic polymer can be produced at a low cost while suppressing the purification loss of the compound. The above condensate is also utilizable as an antioxidant, etc. n COPYRIGHT: (C)1989,JPO&Japio |
