PURPOSE: To provide a method for counting Escherichia coli (E. coli) enabling the E. coli to be measured and counted with a high accuracy by allowing a specific color former to act on the E. coli and measuring the color development. n CONSTITUTION: This method for counting Escherichia coli (E. coli) comprises measuring a color development caused by action of a color former, which clearly develops a color by a material typical of each colony derived from E. coli cells present in a test specimen when exposing the test specimen on glucuronidase enzyme activities of the E. coli. The color former preferably has an indoxyl part and β-D-glucuronide part, and is preferably reagents represented by the formula (X, Y and Z are each H, a halogen, a trihalogenated alkene, a trihalomethyl, nitro, an alkyl or an aryl), an alkali metal, a lower alkylammonium or a lower arylammonium salt thereof. n COPYRIGHT: (C)1989,JPO |
