abstract PURPOSE: To obtain a liquid crystal polyester excellent in melt moldability, mechanical properties and optical anisotropy, by reacting an aromatic hydroxycarboxylic acid, a spirodiphenol, etc. with an aromatic dicarboxylic acid, etc. n CONSTITUTION: An aromatic hydroxycarboxylic acid (A) such as p- hydroxybenzoic acid, a spirodiphenol (B) such as 6,6'-dihydroxy-3,3,3',3'- tetramethyl-1,1'-spiroindan, an aromatic diphenol (C) such as (4,4'- dihydroxydiphenylchloro)hydroquinone and an aromatic dicarboxylic acid (D) such as terephthalic acid and/or 4,4'-diphenyldicarboxylic acid are polycondensed in the presence of a catalyst such as Sb 2 O 3 to obtain a polyester of a m.p. ≤400°C, comprising 80W20mol% units of formulas I and/or II, 5W40mol% units of formula III, 0W40mol% units of formulas IV and/or V (wherein R is H, Cl, CH 3 or phenyl) and 10W40mol% units of formulas VI and/or VII, wherein the sum of the molar percentages of the units of formulas IIIWV is equal to the sum of the molar percentages of the nits of formulas VI and VII. n COPYRIGHT: (C)1988,JPO&Japio
