abstract NEW MATERIAL:A liquid crystal compound expressed by formula 1 (R is 6W18C alkyl; m and n are 1 or 2; R' is 1W12C alkyl). n EXAMPLE: Optically active 4'-(3-ethoxybutoxy)phenyl-4-(n-undecyloxy)benzoate. n USE: A display element material, which is an epoch-making material for providing a practical ferroelectric liquid crystal composition, capable of providing a chiral smectic phase exhibiting ferroelectricity within the ambient temperature region, having a great spontaneous polarization value (Ps) and stable to light, heat and moisture. Since the Ps is great, the material has advantages in high rate of response, driving at low voltages, etc., by using as a display element. n PREPARATION: An optically active 3-alkoxy-1-butanol expressed by formula 2 is reacted with a compound expressed by the formula TsCl (Ts is p- toluenesulfonyl) according to the reaction formula to provide a compound expressed by formula 3, which is then reacted with a compound expressed by formula 6 to afford a compound expressed by formula 4, etc. Thereby the aimed compound expressed by formula 1 is obtained. n COPYRIGHT: (C)1988,JPO&Japio
