titleOfInvention | Production of improved fluorinated cation exchange membrane |
abstract | PURPOSE: To obtain the titled membrane by such processes that the surface layer of a fluorinated copolymer membrane having sulfonyl fluoride group is converted into a membrane with sulfonyl chloride group and this group is further converted into carboxylic acid group, fluorine-contg. solvent treatment being made either before or after said carboxylic acid conversion. n CONSTITUTION: First, (A) the surface layer of a fluorinated copolymer with sulfonyl fluoride group is hydrolyzed with an alkali to convert said group into sulfonic acid group followed by further conversion of the sulfonic acid group into sulfonyl chloride group using e.g., phosphorus pentachloride vapor. Thence, the resultant membrane is immersed in (B) a solution prepared by dissolving a reducing agent (pref. hydriodic acid) in water or organic solvent to convert the sulfonyl chloride group into carboxylic acid group, and then or following the process A, the resulting membrane is immersed, pref. while stirring at 30W1,000°C, in (C) a fluorine-contg. solvent (pref. 1,1,2-trichlorotrifluoroethane) for 2W24hr, thus obtaining the objective cation exchange membrane. n COPYRIGHT: (C)1988,JPO&Japio |
