abstract PURPOSE: To provide the title additive which can provide a high-concn. coal- water slurry having low viscosity, long life, and self-fluidity and which comprises, as an indispensable ingredient, a partial sulfonation product (salt) of PS having a particular degree of sulfonation. n CONSTITUTION: PS having a weight-average MW of 2,000W500,000, pref. 4,000W100,000 and prepd. by polymerization of a styrene monomer is partially sulfonated so as to have a degree of sulfonation of 80W95% per styrene unit, thereby preparing the title additive, i.e., a partial sulfonation product of PS. A pulverizer is charged with coal, such as anthracite coal, (sub)bituminous coal, brown coal, or coal prepd. by cleaning the aforesaid coal, water, the aforesaid additive in an amt. of 0.01W5.0wt.%, pref. 0.03W2.0wt.% based on the coal-water slurry, and the coal is pulverized to prepare a long-life and high- concn. coal-water slurry. n COPYRIGHT: (C)1988,JPO&Japio
