titleOfInvention Poly(formylbutadiene)
abstract PURPOSE: To provide the title polymer having formyl groups on the side chains and a narrow molecular weight distribution useful as the modifier for polyolefins, which is composed of two specified types of recurring units comprising a butadiene derivative residue having a formyl group on the side chain as main components. n CONSTITUTION: A poly(formylbutadiene) is composed of main components comprising recurring units (A) of formula I (wherein n=1W7) and recurring units (B) of formula II (wherein n=1W7), with the (A) to (B) molar ratio of 30W70/70W30, has a formyl group on the side chain and a narrow molecular weight distribution. Since the polymer has formyl groups, the polymer can be blended with a polyolefin to impart a hydrophilic nature to it. Since the polymer also has crosslinkable double bonds, it can be blended and crosslinked with a polyolefin to improve the strength of the polyolefin. Therefore, the polymer is effective as the modifier for polyolefins. The polymer is obtained by subjecting a butadiene derivative of formula III (wherein n is as defined above) to anionic living polymerization and then removing a dioxolane ring serving as the protective group. n COPYRIGHT: (C)1988,JPO&Japio
