abstract | PURPOSE: To obtain a 6-methoxy-5-trifluoromethyl-1-naphthalenecarboxylic acid industrially and advantageously, by reacting a 5-iodine compound corresponding to the aimed compound with a trifluoroacetate. n CONSTITUTION: A compound shown by formula I (R is lower alkyl) is reacted with a salt of trifluoroacetic acid such as an alkali metal or alkaline earth metal salt, especially sodium salt in the presence of a proper catalyst such as cuprous iodide or cuprous bromide, especially cuprous iodide and in a proper solvent preferably N-methylpyrrolidone or N,N-dimethylformamide at 150W200°C, preferably about 160°C to give the aimed compound shown by formula II useful as an intermediate for a compound shown by formula III (aldose reductase useful as a remedy for diabetic complication) from relatively inexpensive raw materials advantageously without requiring a specific equipment. n COPYRIGHT: (C)1988,JPO&Japio |
