abstract PURPOSE:To obtain a clear gel base by using specific amounts of polyhydric alcohol, carboxyvinyl polymer, pH-controlling agent and water respectively, thus being used as a cosmetic base, because it has high clarity, reduced skin irritation, high moisture retention and high thermal stability. CONSTITUTION:(A) 30-80wt.% of a polyhydric alcohol, especially 1,3-butylene glycol, dipropylene glycol, tripropylene glycol and/or hexylene glycol (B) 0.1-5wt.% of carboxyvinyl polymer as a gelling agent, (C) 0.02-3wt.% of pH-controller and (D) the rest amount of water are used to give the subject clear gel base. The base has high safety to skin, high thermal stability, reduced change in viscosity with the passage of time, high moisture retention, high clarity and good feeling on use, thus being used as a base for cosmetic, medicines and quasi-drugs.
