abstract PURPOSE:To obtain the titled compound having quality equal to that of compound obtained when a novel tertiary amine is used, by previously subjecting a tertiary amine recovered from reaction system to dehydration treatment using a compound decomposable by reacting with water such as carboxylic anhydride and using the treated tertiary amine in reaction with an aliphatic halide. CONSTITUTION:In the production of the aimed alkylketene dimer from the reaction of an aliphatic halide with a tertiary amine recovered from reaction system, the recovered tertiary amine (e.g. triethylamine) is previously subjected to dehydration treatment using a compound (excluding lower ketene dimer) decomposable by reacting with water i.e. carboxylic anhydride (e.g. succinic anhydride), chlorinated sulfur compound (e.g. thionyl chloride), isocyanate compound (e.g. methyl isocyanate). When salting out or crude dehydration using a dehydrating agent such as calcium chloride is carried out prior to the treatment of the recovered tertiary amine by the decomposable dehydrating agent, use amount of the dehydrating agent is reduced.
