PURPOSE: To efficiently produce an alcohol, such as butanol or ethanol, by cultivating a thermophilic anaerobic bacterium belonging to the genus Clostridium in a culture medium containing saccharides under reduced pressure. n CONSTITUTION: A thermophilic anaerobic bacterium, such as Clostridium.thermosaccharolyticum CB-1666 (FERM P-8274), 6957 (FERM P-8071), ATCC 7956 or TR-3 (FERM BP-953), is anaerobically cultivated in a culture medium containing a carbon source, such as glucose, cellulose, sucrose, maltose, cellobiose, lactose, xylose or starch, nitrogen source, inorganic salts, organic nutrients, etc., at 40W65°C, preferably 55W60°C and pH5W8, preferably pH5.5W7.0 for 1W10 days, preferably 2W6 days under a reduced pressure of 100W200mmHg, preferably 120W180mmHg to afford the aimed alcohol, such as butanol or ethanol. n COPYRIGHT: (C)1988,JPO&Japio |
