titleOfInvention Optically active ester compound and liquid crystal
abstract NEW MATERIAL:The compound of formula I (R 1 is 4W18C alkyl or alkoxy; R 2 is 2W10C alkyl; * represents asymmetric carbon; m is 1 or 2). n EXAMPLE: 4-(4'-n-Decylbiphenyl-4-carbonyloxy)benzoic acid (S)-1-methyl-2-butox yethyl ester. n USE: A material for display element. It is stable to moisture and light, has excel lent weather resistance and gives a chiral smectic C liquid crystal having high response. n PREPARATION: A commercially available 4-acetoxybenzoic acid is made to react with thionyl chloride according to the reaction formula to obtain an acid chloride of formula VIII. The chloride is made to react with a compound of formula IX and the resultant compound of formula X is reacted with benzylamine to obtain a compound of formula XI. The objective compound of formula I is produced by reacting the compound of formula XI with a com pound of formula XIII derived from a compound of formula XIII. n COPYRIGHT: (C)1988,JPO&Japio
