PURPOSE: To readily obtain the titled compound useful in an intermediate for dye, etc., in good yield, by catalytically reacting 4,6-ditert. butylresorcinol as a raw material with aldehyde and H 2 and carrying out detertiary butylation. n CONSTITUTION: 4,6-Ditert. butylresorcinol is catalytically reacted with aldehydes such as formaldehyde in an organic carboxylic acid solvent such as acetic acid in the presence of a catalyst carried on a compound having sulfone group such as p-toluene sulfonic acid or ≥1 oxyacid of sulfur and VIII group metal such as Pd under H 2 pressure of 1W100atm. at 50W200°C to afford 2-alkyl-4,6- ditert. butyl-resorcinol, which is the subjected to detert. butylation using a catalyst such as concentrated sulfuric acid to provide the aimed compound.
