abstract | PURPOSE: To obtain the titled compound useful as physiologically active substance or its intermediate, easily in high yield, without using concentrated hydrochloric acid, etc., by reacting hydroxynitrile with water in the presence of ruthenium-based catalyst, etc., under neutral condition. n CONSTITUTION: The objective compound can be produced by reacting a nitrile having hydroxyl group in the molecule with water in the presence of a ruthenium-based catalyst or rhodium-based catalyst at 140W180°C. Preferably, the amount of water is usually 1W3mol. and that of the catalyst is 0.03mol. per 1mol. of the hydroxynitrile. The ruthenium-based catalyst or rhodium-based catalyst is e.g. RuH 2 [P(C 6 H 5 ) 3 ] 4 , RuH(CO)[P(C 6 H 5 ) 3 ] 3 and RuCl 2 .nH 2 O.
