titleOfInvention Production of gamma-hydroxybutyric acid
abstract PURPOSE: To readily obtain the titled compound useful as an intermediate raw materials for drugs and agricultural chemicals in high yield without using expensive raw materials, by hydrogenating maleic anhydride and/or succinic anhydride as a raw material in the presence of a palladium catalyst. n CONSTITUTION: Maleic anhydride and/or succinic anhydride is used as a starting raw material and hydrogenated in the presence of a palladium catalyst in a solvent such as preferably methyl acetate, tetrahydrofuran, etc., at 25W100°C, preferably 50W95°C to give the aimed compound. A catalyst obtained by supporting metal palladium on active carbon, alumina, etc., is preferable as the catalyst. The amount of the catalyst used is 0.01W1wt.%, especially ≥0.5wt.% based on the starting raw material. The hydrogenating reaction can be dividedly carried out at two stages and when maleic anhydride is used as a raw material, maleic anhydride is hydrogenated at the first stage and formed succinic anhydride is further hydrogenated. n COPYRIGHT: (C)1988,JPO&Japio
