abstract | PURPOSE: To produce the titled compound on an industrial scale at a low cost, by alkylating a di- or trialkylbenzene in the presence of hydrogen using a catalyst comprising crystalline aluminosilicate modified with a heteropolyacid. n CONSTITUTION: A polyalkylbenzene, especially trimethylbenzene and tetramethylbenzene is produced by reacting an aromatic compound containing dialkylbenzene and/or trialkylbenzene with an alkylation agent, especially methanol and/or dimethyl ether in the presence of hydrogen using a catalyst comprising preferably a mordenite-type crystalline aluminosilicate treated with a modifying agent containing one or more compounds selected from heteropolyacid and its salt.
