abstract NEW MATERIAL:An optically active compound of formula I [R 1 is (substituted) branched or straight-chain alkyl, acyl or alkoxycarbonyl; R 2 is (substituted) branched or straight-chain alkyl; X 1 and Z 1 are single bond or bivalent chain group; Y is alkyl, alkoxy, halogen or H; A 1 is bivalent group having 6-membered ring containing cyclohexane ring; k is 0 or 1; when k is 1, then e is 1 or 2; x is 0 or 1; y is 0W8]. n EXAMPLE: p-(t-4-n-Octylcyclohexyl)benzoic acid 4-(4-pentyloxy)pentyloxyphenyl ester. n USE: Useful as a ferroelectric liquid crystal element.
