abstract PURPOSE: To improve maturity of rice plant and to prevent reduction in maturity of rice plant caused by delayed cool-weather damage, by treating rice plant with an effective amount of brassinolide at a specific growth period of rice plant. n CONSTITUTION: An effective amount of brassinolide [=(2α,3α,22R,23R)- tetrahydroxy-24S-methyl-B-homo-7-oxa-5α-a-cholestan-6-one] shown by the formu la having enfancing effects on freezing hardiness and alleviating effects on sterility by cool-weather damage of disorder type is applied to stems and leaves of rice plants or absorbed from the roots from flower differentiation period to maturing data of rice plant in a condition wherein normal pollination and fertilization are carried out and integrated temperature in maturing period after the pollination and fertilization is smaller than the average value to improve maturity of rice plant. Brassinolide used in the treatment is preferably in an aqueous solution, dust or granule and the concentration thereof is 10 -6 W10 2 ppm.
