titleOfInvention Optically active compound
abstract NEW MATERIAL:The optically active compound of formula I (R 1 is 1W18C alkyl or alkyloxy; R 2 =R 1 ; A is group of formula IV, V or VI). n EXAMPLE: (-)-4-Octyloxy-4'-(1-hexanoyloxyethyl)biphenyl. n USE: A component of a ferroelectric liquid crystal mixture. It has compatibility to other compound and is useful as a raw material of a smectic liquid crystal mixture having high spontaneous polarization and a liquid crystal for an optical switching element having high response speed. n PREPARATION: The compound of formula I can be produced by the dehydrative condensation reaction of (A) an optically active 4-substituted-4'-(1-hydroxyethyl) biphenyl of formula II produced by the biochemical ester interchange reaction of a racemic alcohol and a lower fatty acid triglyceride with (B) a fatty acid of formula III in the presence of a dehydrative condensation agent such as dicyclohexylcarbodiimide, dimethylaminopyridine, etc., in a solvent. n COPYRIGHT: (C)1988,JPO&Japio
