abstract PURPOSE: To produce highly pure and optically active cyclopentenones in a high yield, by asymmetrically hydrolyzing dl-cyclopentenone esters with an esterase. n CONSTITUTION: dl-Cyclopentenone esters of formula I [R 1 is substituent of formula II (X-Y is CH 2 -CH 2 or cis CH=CH; R is lower alkyl); R' is alkyl or alkenyl which may be substituted with halogen atoms] are symmetrically hydrolyzed with an esterase to form an optically active cyclopentenones of formula III (R 2 is H or R'CO-; * represents an asymmetrical carbon).
