titleOfInvention Polyester film for magnetic recording
abstract PURPOSE:To obtain a biaxially oriented polyester film which is superior in electromagnetic conversion characteristics and running durability, by making a relation between the number of protrusions and heights of the protrusions of the film surface into a specific range by containing a water-containing silicate mineral of specific aluminum or specific calcium carbonate along with the that within polyester. CONSTITUTION:A 0.1-0.6wt% water-containing silicate mineral of aluminum whose mean particle diameter is 0.2-2.0mum or 0.01-0.4wt% calcium carbonate whose mean particle diameter is 0.2-1.5mum along with the former water-containing silicate mineral are dispersed and contained within polyester. The titled film possesses a protrusion distribution wherein a distribution curve displaying a relation between the number of protrusion (Y: pieces/mm<2>) obtained in a sphere of more than the number of protrusions 19 pieces/mm<2> and a height of the protrusion (X: mum) does not cross with a straight line displayed by log10Y=-9.8X+4.4 within a range of log10Y>1.3. The film is so constituted further that the maximum value of the protrusion distribution falls within a range of log10Y>=-18X+3.7 and surface roughness is less than 0.025mum. With this constitution, a thing which is of use as a reproduction tape for a long-playing tererecording, whose surface possesses the predetermined protrusion distribution and does not have existence of large protrusion is obtained.
