PURPOSE: To advantageously obtain the titled substance which is a raw material for polyester resins, etc., without problems of post-treatment, etc., by reacting a ketocarboxylic acid with a phenol in an acidic medium in the presence of a specific catalyst without using a mercapto compound having a peculiar smell as the catalyst. n CONSTITUTION: A ketocarboxylic acid expressed by formula I, e.g. pyruvic acid or acetoacetic acid, is reacted with a phenol expressed by formula II in the presence of at least one selected from thiourea, silicon tetrachloride, alumi num chloride, metal phosphates, boron trifluoride or complexes thereof in an acidic medium, preferably hydrochloric acid to afford the aimed compound. The reaction temperature is 50W90°C, preferably 55W75°C. The charging molar ratios based on 1mol compound expressed by formula I are preferably as follows; 2.0W4.0mol compound expressed by formula II, 2.5W6.0mol acidic medi um and 0.01W0.5mol catalyst. n COPYRIGHT: (C)1987,JPO&Japio |
