abstract | PURPOSE: To obtain an unsaturated alkyd resin excellent in workability, water resistance and chemical resistance, by reacting an epoxy resin with a specified amount of cresol and esterifying the hydroxyl groups of this product with an α,β-unsaturated polybasic acid. n CONSTITUTION: An epoxy resin of formula I is reacted with cresol in an amount sufficient to eliminate the epoxy groups of this epoxy resin to form a reaction product of formula II. The hydroxyl groups of this reaction product are esterified with an α,β-unsaturated polybasic acid or its anhydride to obtain the purpose unsaturated alkyd of formula III. In the formulae, R 1 and R 2 are each H or methyl, n is 0W2 and m is 2W20. Because said unsaturated alkyd has methylphenoxymethylene groups as side chains, it is bulky and is low in a content of double bonds per unit MW, which will advantageously affect the boiling water resistance and heat distortion temperature of the resin. n COPYRIGHT: (C)1987,JPO&Japio |
