abstract PURPOSE: To obtain a molded article having extremely improved flame retardance, succeeding in various flame-retardant examination methods, by treating an expanded molded article with a sulfonating agent or chlorosulfonating agent followed by treating it with a basic neutralizing agent. n CONSTITUTION: A molded article of expanded polystyrene is treated with a sulfonating agent or chlorosulfonating agent and treated with a basic neutralizing agent. Chlorosulfuric acid or sulfur trioxide are used as the sulfonating agent or chlorosulfonating agent and the treatment is carried out at room temperature for 30W90min.
