abstract PURPOSE: A melt-moldable polycarbonate suitable in the production of an optical information material excellent in heat resistance and optical properties, having a specified carbonate bond structural unit. n CONSTITUTION: A diol having at least one pendant aromatic group [e.g., bis(4- hydroxyphenyl)phenylmethane] together with, optionally, an acid chloride such as terephthaloyl chloride or a diamine such as piperazine is polymerized at 0W100°C in the presence of an inert solvent such as methylene chloride and an acid acceptor such as pyridine by blowing phosgene into the reaction mixture to obtain a polycarbonate, average MW of 9,500W14,000, containing 25W100wt% (based on the total carbonate structural unit) carbonate bond structural unit containing at least one pendant aromatic group, represented by the formula (wherein X and Y are each H or a 1W6C aliphatic hydrocarbon group and either X or Y is a 6W12C aryl or aralkyl and Z and W are each H or a 1W6C aliphatic hydrocarbon group). n COPYRIGHT: (C)1987,JPO&Japio
