titleOfInvention Production of chloromethylpyridine
abstract PURPOSE: To obtain the titled compound useful as an intermediate raw material for medicines, agricultural chemicals, etc., advantageously and industrially and advantageously in good yield without using a large amount of a mineral acid solvent, by chlorinating an inorganic acid salt of methylpyridine as a raw material in an aqueous solvent with Cl 2 while irradiating with ultraviolet rays. n CONSTITUTION: Methylpyridine is dropped into concd. hydrochloric acid and dehydrated to a given water concentration or below at ≤100°C, etc., to give an inorganic acid salt, particularly preferably hyrochloride of the methylpyridine expressed by the formula (n is an integer 1W4), which is then chlorinated at 50W160°C, preferably 70W130°C in a solvent in 1W50%, preferably 5W30% concentration by introducing Cl 2 thereinto while irradiating with ultraviolet rays to afford the aimed chloromethylpyridine, e.g. 2-chloromethylpyridine. n EFFECT: The chlorination of the CH 3 group can be selectively carried out with almost no chlorination of the pyridine uncleus. The salt has individually about 150°C melting point, but is industrially and readily handled by the water contained (≥1%) therein since the melting point is reduced to about ≤100°C. n COPYRIGHT: (C)1987,JPO&Japio
